Contemplation

Consisting of three sets of works, for me contemplative imagery is a foray to the core of visual art by attempting to elicit a viewer’s emotional reaction through a feeling, sensation or impression. Some images may appear bereft of meaning, purely esthetic, while others may be more expressive. Conceived to be seen as large format prints, the images call for the viewer to be absorbed and use their imagination in interpreting the work into something meaningful to each of them.

One set, Abstractions, attempts to do so without direct association to the object world. Crafted by isolating a portion of a ‘normal’ scene, it engages color, light, shadow, texture, shape and/or form to convert and abridge the ‘real’ or concrete representation of a place or thing into something new to perceive, images with their own discrete presence.

The second set, Pensive, whilst related to my Abstractions are defined by a more identifiable or concrete object or place. Nevertheless, these likewise strive to encourage viewers to contemplation – thinking profoundly about something, in a ‘spiritual’ sense of inner vision or seeing.

The third set, Still Life, is informed by that genre’s traditions in art, guided by its painting and photographic masters as a springboard. Images here explore the focus, the infinite inflexions of material, the composition rhythms, and the contrasting vibrancy of stillness arising out of the subjects; probing the underlying tension between the harmonious poise of the individual elements and their ephemerality – a tension alluded by Still Life’s seminal French term “nature morte”.

“Photography is an art of observation. It’s about finding something interesting in an ordinary place……I’ve found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them”
