Odyssey

Since Homer’s classic poem, the word Odyssey has come to refer to any epic, complex voyage, often a quest for a goal, in both the literal and figurative senses, including an intellectual, psychological, or spiritual wandering or pursuit.

I am often struck by the parallels between that poem and ocean travel experiences. Both entail themes of wandering, quests over unfamiliar spaces, and homecoming. Crossing oceans evokes the essence of an odyssey – the questioning of what lies ahead, the uncertainty of future direction, and journeying without familiar guideposts. Oceans – water and air – are very commonplace, and yet they underlie humans’ very existence; our beginnings of life shrouded in mystery.

In undertaking the portfolio Odyssey I wanted to create not so much a photographic object as an opening to enable the viewer to embrace their own passage. Using different places and times the images transcend geographic and temporal conditions – turbulence and tranquility – to focus on eternity; encouraging prolonged attention and supporting contemplation on the ways in which humanity makes sense of itself.

The black and white motif provides a semi-abstracted view of oceanic “realities”. Viewers are encouraged to develop their own interpretations. The works focus aesthetically on tonalities, shapes, and graduations of light. They do not strive to define or explain the realm. Rather they seek to uncover it gradually through opportunity for observation and perception.
