The images in this project focus on a stretch of Ontario’s King’s Highway 7, the Trans-Canada Highway in eastern Ontario; particularly the section between Perth and Madoc. Driving that route today generates a three-way struggle in me – a sensation of ‘such a loss’, a marvelling on the aesthetics of the place, and an understanding of the socioeconomic factors underlying the area’s challenges. As others drive this route do they see what has occurred? Do they know what caused this upheaval? Do they recall the possibilities it once had? Once a major arterial joining Canada’s largest city, Toronto, to the nation’s capital, Ottawa, today it’s a route fringed by failed businesses and abandoned properties; places where people poured everything into enterprises, worked hard to succeed, but ultimately forced to abandoned their efforts.
